Minor Ingmar Bergman drama does a good job of probing the lives of two very different women. One is a photographer (Eva Dahlbeck) who is so obsessed with a married ex-lover that she moves her latest fashion shoot to his town in order to see him again. The other is the photographer’s model (Harriet Andersson), who has just quarreled with her navy boyfriend and decides to accept the advances of a rich, older man (Gunnar Björnstrand) to spite him. Eventually, she realizes that she actually cares for the man, while Dahlbeck finally learns to distance herself from her damaging relationship. The characterizations are terrific, but the plotting is aimless and doesn’t seem to ever go anywhere in particular. Performances are all good, especially Andersson.
