Epic Chinese drama follows the exploits of  as a man whose life is severely challenged by the cultural revolution. Starting off happily married (to ) with a young son, he loses contact with his loved ones when Chairman Mao’s Great Leap Forward tears the Chinese countryside apart and throws the entire nation into chaos and war. Featuring many powerful sequences and striking photography, it isn’t my first choice of director Zhang Yimou’s films, but it is a solid, worthy drama.
