Bil’s rating (out of 5): BBBB. USA/United Kingdom/Japan/West Germany, 1982. Rankin/Bass Productions, Incorporated Television Company. Screenplay by Peter S. Beagle, based on his novel. Produced by Jules Bass, Arthur Rankin Jr.. Music by Jimmy Webb. Production Design by Arthur Rankin Jr.. Film Editing by Tomoko Kida.
Elegantly produced animated fable about a unicorn (voiced beautifully by Mia Farrow) who goes on a quest in search of others of her kind, none of whom she has never met. Along the way she meets a feebly-talented magician (Alan Arkin) and a kind-hearted charwoman (Tammy Grimes) who aid her and accompany her various adventures. When she arrives at the castle of an aging king (Christopher Lee) and his valiant son (Jeff Bridges), she discovers the truth behind her search and it leads her to some very important decisions. A lovely tale that captures folklore at its truest, the film is sometimes undone by its primitive animation but is rescued by its writing (faithfully adapted from the novel by Peter S. Beagle).
