The atrocity that occurred when Soviet invaders ruthlessly murdered thousands of Polish soldiers in the Katyn forest in 1944 is brought to vivid life in this masterpiece of a film, directed by the great Andrzej Wajda, whose own father was killed in the massacre.  Wajda brilliantly covers the various controversial aspects of the story, including the stories of soldiers and their concerned families, as well as the years following the killings when the Soviet-controlled Polish government convinced the nation’s citizens that the deeds had been committed by their World War II German enemies; anyone who disagreed with this theory was considered an enemy to the state. Featuring stylish cinematography and superb performances, the film dances around the centre point of its narrative before finally revealing the tragedy at its core in its conclusion. It’s one of the most disturbing films made about the war, and features the magnificent filmmaker still showing incredible strength so many decades into his career.
