Secrets Of The Heart (Secretos Del Corazon)

BBBB

(out of 5)

Two boys are sent to live with their two aunts, away from their mother in order that they might go to a good school. The younger of the two finds the world of adults thoroughly fascinating, their hushed-up whispers and strange motivations something that he doesn’t understand and attributes to supernatural powers. Really he’s witnessing love affairs and disappointed dreams but is simply too little to understand them. This film by Montxo Armendariz doesn’t rewrite the cinematic history of films told from the point of view of young people, but it is a solid and worthy entry in that canon, a welcome younger sibling to a movie like Saura’s Cria Cuervos. The performances are exceptional, and the feeling of nostalgia palpable.
