Juliette Binoche plays a French secret agent whose former American contact goes missing before resurfacing later and contacting her. Binoche’s orders are to round up the American’s estranged daughter and meet him in Paris; along the way they pick up his son and form a curious threesome while waiting to find out what impending disaster the mystery man has information about. Considering it takes place in the first week of September 2001, you can pretty much guess where it’s going, but knowing what is coming only adds to the enjoyable tension of this uneven but interesting thriller. Binoche is riveting as usual, but the film can never decide if it wants to be more of a blockbuster thriller or a political movie with a heart, and the uncomfortable changes between well-acted talky scenes and the more intense turns when the group has to outrun sadistic hit man John Turturro (who is horribly miscast) make for a very unusual experience. Still, the people who run around town writing ‘9/11 was an inside job’ on lampposts will be delighted by it.
