After the promising but not quite super films that Pedro Almodovar had started with (Pepi Luci Bom, Labyrinth Of Passion, Dark Habits), he showed his first genuine sense of storytelling flair with this wonderful comedy. Carmen Maura is terrific as a put-upon house cleaner who is addicted to sniffing chemical products and is tired of being abused by her crabby cabdriver husband. Their one son is a drug dealer, the other sells his body to a pedophile dentist, and the grandmother of the house bottles water and sells it to the family for cash. How Maura navigates this absolute madness is a delight to watch, a perfect precursor to Almodovar’s most popular comedy Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown. Verónica Forqué also stars as Maura’s neighbour.
