USA, 1982. Jack Rollins & Charles H. Joffe Productions, Orion Pictures. Screenplay by Woody Allen. Cinematography by Gordon Willis. Produced by Robert Greenhut. Production Design by Mel Bourne. Costume Design by Santo Loquasto. Film Editing by Susan E. Morse.
Inspired by Bergman’s Smiles Of A Summer Night, Woody Allen‘s comedy takes place at a beautiful country cottage at the turn of the century. Inventor Allen and wife Mary Steenburgen invite a group of guests to their cottage for a weekend, and over the course of that time the various characters have entanglements and interactions that are both sweet and hilarious. Tony Roberts plays a sex-obsessed doctor who can’t keep his hands off his beautiful nurse (Julie Hagerty), while Jose Ferrer is terrific as a famous philosopher who arrives with his beautiful fiance (Mia Farrow, in her first film with the filmmaker), with whom Allen becomes smitten.
