No matter what you think you know about vampires and vampire movies, prepare to be amazed: this Swedish import is a creepy, affecting science-fiction drama. A lonely young boy who lives with his single mother spends his days bullied at school and his nights playing by himself. He is delighted when he meets the little girl who lives next door, thinking he’s found himself a new playmate. The twist is, she’s actually an undead bloodsucker who does take a liking to our little hero but doesn’t believe she can be the friend he wants and needs. Destiny puts these two characters in each other’s way as they wrestle with adolescent anxiety and observe the problems of their surrounding elders. Never once revealing its hand too quickly, this cold, sobering thriller moves at a glacial pace and allows you to fully enjoy the surprises it has in store for you. It’s a really exciting piece of art, thought-provoking and unforgettable.
