This thoroughly underrated film offers a poignant view of life in small town America, one that is turned upside down when the celebrity of the title is rumoured to be returning from whence she came.  Famous for being immortalized in a song written for her, Roxy Carmichael is the inspiration for such new life in the town that teenager Winona Ryder just can’t help but be affected.  A rather lonely girl, Ryder eventually becomes convinced that she is Roxy’s long-lost daughter and ingratiates herself into the life of her ex-husband (). Jim Abrahams directs with a subtlety you never would have suspected, and Ryder is a marvel.
